I love books me. I own loads. I love buying them. I love holding them. I love the smell of them. It’s just the READING of them I find hard. I predict there’ll be loads of posts about books, but I also predict I won’t finish any of the books per se.
Anyway, my friends at Penguin are trialling an interesting new idea - a subscription only book series - called The Glass Books Of The Dream Eaters (warning: pointless Flash). A bit like those K-TEL compilations in the 80’s, this series of books “is not available in the shops kids”, but rather via an exclusive online subscription.
Creating this sense of uniqueness around a book is great idea. Book launches are hard in this digital day and age - there’s simply too much other stuff vying for our attention. Rather like the music industry, publishing is having a hard time figuring out how to harness online behaviour to its advantage, but UNLIKE the music industry it’s not benefitted from the halo effects of digital consumption of it’s product.
The subscription phase has passed i’m afraid, but it would be interesting to see whether this approach is successful. Exclusivity and scarcity and powerful drivers. It deserves to do well, but I still doubt i’ll finish reading them!
